We live in a world of technological complexity, a world of separation from nature and the foods that give us life. Our ancestors were rooted in the wild community, a relationship of mutual respect and deep understanding, something that has been forgotten in our westernized way of being in the world.
The Wyld Roots Immersion Program is a 12 week dive into deepening our relationship with nature, connecting with agrarian roots and coming home to the unique gift that we were born to live into our communities.
This immersion is a process of ecological re-membering. The land holds all the teachings for us to re-member, for we are all creatures of this earth that have evolved with her for millions of years. Our development as humans has been intimately linked with nature, and to remove ourselves from this relationship has put us in a bit of an ecological dilemma.
Our overall well being is deeply rooted in the patterns and formations found in nature, which is why we find such wellness and wholeness when we immerse ourselves within this natural beauty.
By rooting ourselves in place, removed from the complexity of technology we can once again remember our profound relationship with the wild community and the unique gift we have been asked to live into the world.
Our intention with this immersion is to lay the foundation for those looking to become students of the land. We see Twisted Roots Farm as a refuge, a sanctuary and a pocket of cultural and ecological re-membering. To realize this vision, this land requires students to carry forward the work beyond our time.
Areas of Study and Experiential Learning
Nature Based Dialogue
Much of your time will be developing a more profound relationship with the wild community. You will be engaged in daily practices that provide opportunities to open this conversation with the wild, and learn ways to hear what is being reflected back to you. Through in-depth readings, mentorship and time spent on the land, these nature based practices will be explored.
Heart Centered Communication
Way of Council is a form of communication we use extensively at Twisted Roots Farm. This is a talking circle practice where we speak from the heart. You will be participating in this process with volunteers and learn this way of communicating and reflecting their time on the land. Opportunities will be given to students to lead councils offering a deeper understanding of this practice. In addition to the talking circle format of communication, we also embrace circle formats of speaking and practice consensus driven decision making. Each day we work within a community context in how we plan our day in a co-creative way, and we have to make decisions as a community of students, volunteers and others who may be part of our day on the farm.
Permaculture Inspired Living
You will be participating in the daily demands of growing food, animal and vegetable within a permaculture and sacred farming framework. This is how we sustain our community, and your energy helps support this place for your season and for others to follow in your footsteps. Our farming and homesteading practices are rooted in permaculture principles and systems designs. It is also a way of living that is in reciprocity with the wild community, and our role is one of supporting the conditions for biodiversity and regeneration. This also includes a practice of sacred farming, where we are tending to the growing of food in a way that fosters and respects our relationships with the plants and animals we have negotiated agreements with. This work is unfolding each and every year at Twisted Roots Farm and is based on the foundational work of many amazing teachers, however Bill Molison and Martin Prechtel are two teachers that significantly inspire the ongoing development of this work here at Twisted Roots Farm. The site is also completely off-grid with minimal power. This way of living provides opportunities to be in direct relationships with water, food, waste and resources gaining valuable perspective on consumption and what true needs really are.
Wellness Development
During the immersion, we will work with students to develop or deepen personal daily practices. It is important to have practices that will open our hearts and deepen our relationships with ourselves, the people around us and the wild community. There will also be opportunities to connect with practitioners who will be offering their teachings in a variety of workshops and classes that will be hosted on site.
Gift giving and Holistic Economics
In addition to your direct time on the farm and volunteering within the community, you will also be unfolding ideas and ways to offer your unique gifts to the world.. You will arrive with skills, abilities and talents, however this invitation is to step into something that has been calling to you, but you have never fully stepped into.. By exploring these personal offerings, you may be discovering new ways to contribute to the community, expressing artistry or creating new economies for yourself. You may be a yoga instructor for instance, but are looking to add something that is missing from your practice. You could be an artist looking to understand a new medium or way of expression. You may also be at the start or crossroads in your career, looking for ways to offer your skills and abilities to the world in a different way. Twisted Roots Farm has many different opportunities to support your creativity and offers a platform that is unique for you to explore how your talents can relate to being supported economically. We will work with you in a mentorship capacity to help navigate your ideas. This can range from crafting localized products that can be sold from the farm, offering services / programs from the farm, or a project that can add to your portfolio or certain practices and skills you are trying to manifest.
