Reclaiming the commons
A Social Enterprise Project

If we will have the wisdom to survive,
to stand like slow-growing trees
on a ruined place, renewing, enriching it,
if we will make our seasons welcome here,
asking not too much of earth or heaven,
then a long time after we are dead
the lives our lives prepare will live
here .......

Excerpt from A Vision, by Wendell Berry
The project
Over the past eight years of hosting volunteers here at our farm, we have heard countless stories and witnessed first-hand the disconnect between people and their food, themselves, nature, community, and a deep longing to re-member ways of living in sacred harmony with life and all that sustains us. The grief felt for these broken threads is truly palpable.
Yet there is hope. And there is no greater power than hope in action.
Our Vision for this land is that she be given the opportunity to continue returning to a completely mature and healthy forest once again, remaining intact so that she will serve as a refuge, a sanctuary, a pocket of cultural and ecological re-membering. To achieve this, we believe that there must be ways that we learn, share knowledge and interact with our food and the wild community (nature).
Through educational and inspirational experiences, we are inviting people here to learn about:

-
Off-grid living
-
Permaculture-inspired living
-
Sustainability
-
Homesteading
-
Holistic health
-
Traditional skills
-
Nature-based connection
-
Environmental education
-
Climate action initiatives

This way of sharing and collaborating requires a community of people. We have always trusted in the ways people can come together, and since the inception of this little project in the woods, others have found their way here to volunteer, study, learn, and participate. Community has given us the opportunity and privilege to unravel this dream.
We truly believe in the power of community.
This is why we have decided to create a social enterprise initiative to move this vision forward.
What we mean by a social enterprise is that a community of support (both locally and globally) can collaborate to manifest and sustain this vision as everything that is learned, created, and developed here is done so by a collective of people, which in turn, will help to support the protection of this land for the future.
Over the last couple of months, we have been pouring our energy into creating a crowdfunding campaign to help us realize the next steps in this project.
Our reasoning behind this approach is that we are looking for alternative ways to fund this project. We could seek investors, or secure loans; however, we are making a conscious effort to move away from a for-profit business model to a social enterprise initiative. We also do not want to burden the land with debt, as our long term goal is to create a continuance plan that will see a non-profit continue this work and protect this land well beyond our lifetimes, and debt is not what we want to pass on.
This is where you, our local and global community, can get involved and support this unfolding.
We will be launching our crowdfunding campaign over the next few weeks, as we continue to build the content for the campaign. The crowdfunding platform allows us to present the project, inviting backers to monetarily support this vision. In exchange for backing our project, you will receive different incentives based on your pledge level. These incentives are designed to be something that we are able to offer once our campaign is successful by reaching our funding target. Basically, a pay it forward concept with the pledge that you make going towards a future service or product that will become available through a successful campaign. Similar to signing up for a farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) where the farmers are supported at the front end of the growing season to set up and grow a successful garden, and then you the subscriber, are able to enjoy the benefits of your early contribution by feasting on delicious veggies throughout the season.
Overview of the Project
The goals of this project are to:
-
Build eight Forest Bunkie accommodations to host guests, volunteers, and students for our on-site workshops, programs, immersive experiences, and unique stay exchanges for artists, researchers, and practitioners
-
Upgrade our outdoor kitchen to better host on-site guests, volunteers, and students
-
Upgrade the roof of Butterfly Lodge using clear PVC roofing material
-
Build a woodfired oven to make unique food for our on-site guests, volunteers, and students as well as the opportunity to offer new workshop possibilities and farm-to-table meals
-
Improve and add to our trail systems for greater access to the forest
-
Install four meditation platforms along the brook
-
Purchase a bio-digester toilet as well as build two additional compost toilets
-
Instal permanent wire fencing in the goat paddock area
-
Build a space for therapeutic goat interactions with a viewing area and goat play structures
-
Develop educational content for ebooks and workshops, as well as create informative videos

-
Form a non-profit society that will support the continuance plan of this land for future generations and the Wild

The completion of these goals will connect people with their food and build healthy relationships with the environment. Through these educational offerings and experiences, a diverse community of people will be able to share ideas and participate in creating solutions to address localizing our food systems and the environmental issues that impact our communities. We envision people coming here to participate from within our local community as well as visitors to the area from across the world.
Through the development of educational content, such as the creation of short videos, informative social media posts, curriculum development, and ebooks, we can reach an even larger community network, thereby sharing ideas that will inspire change in how people connect with their food and the environment in their own communities.
In order to host this variety of people on-site, we are looking to build some very basic Forest Bunkies along the brook. These bunkies will provide accommodations for volunteers and students, as well as guests that we will host on-site for farm immersions, nature-based programs, and multi-day workshops.
Forest Bunkies

AI Generated Image of Forest Bunkies
The unique design of the Forest Bunkies are inspired by the years of micro building projects we have completed here on the farm. We have found it much easier and efficient to pre-fabricate builds in the workshop in panel sections and then assemble the panels at the site, making transportation to more remote locations within the forest a much easier task. We have designed lightweight and strong panels, which are easy to build in the exact measurements that we need using milled wood from our bandsaw mill.
As the Forest Bunkies will be set in the forest, their design will allow maximum light into the space while being as open as possible and still provide adequate protection from the elements.

These Bunkies will be 10 feet by 10 feet in size allowing for accommodations for up to 2 people. The bed system will also be foldable, so that floor space will be available for stretching, mediation, or yoga practices. The front sections will be lofty in height and will face the brook, allowing for amazing forest views and incredible brook acoustics.

Our goal is to have four bunkies built by May 2026 with four more built throughout June and July 2026. We require two bunkies for volunteers, two bunkies for students, and four bunkies for guests.
During the build, we will be documenting the process from start to finish; from tree harvesting, transporting logs to the mill, milling, fabrication, and set up. The video documentation will provide media content for our subscribers as well as the creation of an ebook detailing all of the steps required to build your own bunkie. Our goal is to have the ebook released by October 2026.
We will also be designing and offering multi-day workshops, hosted on-site at the farm, to teach others how to build the bunkies during the months of June and July 2026.
incentives
What we offer in return for your support is very important to us. We have created and designed many offerings over the years, from handcrafted soap made with ingredients from our farm to selling fresh produce from our little farmstand at the top of our driveway.
The incentives we are creating for this campaign are unique and they are directly related to the funding of this project.
Incentives we are working on are:
-
Discounts on upcoming workshops
-
Exclusive farm and nature-immersion experiences
-
Early release of ebook content
-
Sharing your personal story by naming a trail, bench, or cabin in your name

Our hope is that we can offer something to everyone who believes and wants to be involved in this project. And every little bit helps.
How You Can Get Involved
We hope to have this campaign released very soon as we wrap up some of the finishing touches of the campaign. In the meantime, you can follow us on our social media channels and subscribe to our weekly content at the bottom of this page to stay in the know.
You can check out the creations available in our online shop, as any sales help us tremendously at this time of year. Stay-tuned as we replenish our inventory! We have also begun putting dates to some of our workshops, experiences and programs, with early sign up much appreciated as we begin to map out our season.
Last, but never least, we wouldn't be where we are today without the courageous and willing volunteers who have found their way to our farm and we will need many more volunteers this season to bring this vision further into the world. Our volunteer program is such a great way to dive in and experience the forest and farm firsthand. Be sure to visit our WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) profile and let us know if you would like to be a part of this exciting project this season.
We want to thank you for the continued support we have received, it is truly humbling and inspirational!
We look forward to what is shaping up to be an exciting season here at the farm.
