Where the Forest Meets the Farm
Over the years, we have welcomed many people to our farm here in the forest to share our experience of homesteading and living in close relationship with the land.
Our offering is to host others in an immersive way, to learn and co-create a new narrative of our connection with land and food.
If you're interested in meaningful conversations about:

the land, forest and farm

Twisted Roots Farm is situated on 74 acres of primarily forest, with the farm comprising about 5 acres. There is a brook that runs through the land which is the life blood of this forest and the farm alike. The forest is diverse, with a healthy riparian zone that holds an array of old growth acadian forest. Our camping sites and various structures are located in this forest, which breathes the life and vitality of this land.
Our space is rustic, so if you're looking for a five star retreat centre, you will be sadly disappointed.
Amenities are simple and basic, which we feel offers the perfect setting for a genuine nature-based immersion experience.
We are not about luxury, but rather content through interaction and mutual story telling.
How the immersion works

For our overnight immersion farm stay, we are inviting those who are travelling with their own camping gear to join us for dinner, breakfast, a tour of the farm, heartfelt conversation, and a walk in the woods with our herd of Alpine Goats.
We will provide dinner on the day you arrive, fresh from our farm or other local farms, in our screened outdoor kitchen, sharing a meal and good conversation surrounded by the forest . It is here that we explore a variety of topics related to permaculture, off-grid living, nature-based dialogue, and other engaging discussions. It could be with just us, or there could be other fellow campers and volunteers, depending on who is at the farm during your stay.
Always interesting, engaging, and inspiring.
Coffee and tea will be available early in the morning before breakfast. Those who are interested can join us for a morning nature-based meditation to begin the day. Before breakfast, campers will also have the opportunity to engage in their own morning practice at our newly completed Butterfly Lodge, a perfect place for morning meditation or yoga which overlooks the brook and is screened for ease of enjoyment during the buggy season. Or you can enjoy your hot bevy at the waterfall in The Perch, a smaller, more intimate screened space alongside the brook.
Shortly after breakfast, we will introduce you to our herd of goats and go for a walk along our forested trails. This is a great way to see the farm and experience the magic of the forest that surrounds us here at Twisted Roots.
For campers who are only staying one night, this will conclude your visit with us, with checkout time set for 12:00 pm.
Campers may also choose to stay for additional nights with the option of add-on experiences and meals. Guests will also have full access to the outdoor kitchen to prepare their own meals. Please note that we do not offer this option until campers have spent the first night as outlined in our immersion experience. We feel that this is a way for you to get to know the farm, the land, and us...a must if you wish to extend your stay.
Accommodations, Meals and amenities

Our immersion and camping stay is hosted with the intention of being part of a community during your time here, depending on who else is here either as a volunteer or as a fellow camper. As our site is small and cozy, we only have the capacity to host up to 8 campers at any given time. Some meals will be shared, while others are independent, but cooking space is communal and shared by both campers and volunteers.
Tent sites are located in various locations throughout the forest; either on wooden tent platforms or level gravel sites. The sites are approximately 10 feet by 10 feet in size and are all semi-private.
Washrooms are outhouse style and are simple composting toilets. For longer stays, we will cover compost toilet basics with campers as some maintenance will be required.
There is a shower stall that allows for a simple bucket shower, with the option of heating water on the propane stove.
The outdoor kitchen is a screened cooking and dining area and we ask that all meals be prepared in this space. A stove is available for cooking and campers are responsible for their own dishes. We ask that spaces be kept clean and tidy.
There is no running water to the outdoor kitchen, so water must be carried from the brook for dishes and showers. We do supply potable drinking water, available in the outdoor kitchen.
Butterfly Lodge, our exciting new build here at the farm, is available for use by campers as a community space, unless other activities are happening. The space is 28 x 24 feet and can be used for yoga, meditation, reading, reflection, or enjoying a morning coffee or a place to interact with others. We will have times designated for specific activities, for instance a time in the morning set aside for those who want to meditate or spend some time in silence.
The Perch, a 10 x 10 foot screened building, is a smaller more intimate space overlooking the brook. There are cushioned benches in this open and airy building, the perfect spot for reflection and relaxation or to cool down on a hot summers' day.
Meals consist of locally-sourced foods from our farm or other local farms in the area. We do not have a set menu, and the type of meals prepared depends on the day, work schedule, and local availability. Meals are wholesome and cooked from scratch with high quality nutritious ingredients. We can accommodate vegetarian diets to some degree; however, if you are a strict vegetarian or vegan this becomes a challenge for us with regards to food preparation and sharing meals. As we are a mixed farm, raising both vegetables and animals, we eat what we grow and raise, which includes eggs, dairy, and meat. Our invitation is to experience a truly localized diet based on permaculture methodology, while experiencing first-hand how plants and animals work together to create a healthy homestead with good soil fertility.
