Plantain and Comfrey Salve

This salve contains a combination of plantain and comfrey leaves infused in lard from our pigs with some added local beeswax.  The plants are harvested here from our farm, where they grow wild, so you can be certain that they are not sprayed.

 

The plantain (Plantago major) plant has antiseptic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it wonderful for treating insect bites, stings, cuts and scrapes, burns, bruises, and other skin issues and irritants.  Many herbalists consider plantain to be “nature’s band-aid” as it is an incredible wound healer, shortening recovery time and helping to draw toxicity from the body.  This salve can be used to help soothe itchy skin and rashes, as well as draw out slivers.  

 

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) was once commonly referred to as “knitbone” due to its traditional use in healing fractures.  It is also helpful in treating bruises and sprains, reducing inflammation, and healing minor wounds.  Comfrey is so effective in healing wounds that care must be taken to ensure that you do not apply it on a dirty wound as the increased cell production, and therefore rapid healing, can trap dirt or pus within the wound.  Comfrey can also help heal scratches and sunburns, as well as lessen scarring.

 

Together, plantain and comfrey leaves make for a wonderful, all-round salve for a variety of everyday uses.  

 

And as lard contains saturated fats, the same as human skin, it absorbs easily and is highly moisturizing on its own.  I render the lard using a low heat, ensuring that the end result is a high quality, odorless oil, perfect for salves and other body products, such as our lard soaps and lotion bars.

The salve should be used within 6 months as it does not contain any preservatives or synthetic ingredients.  To prolong the life of your  Salve, please store it in a cool, dark spot or in the fridge.

All of the ingredients for our salves are sourced directly from our gardens and forest here at our farm, other than the beeswax, which is locally sourced from a small producer and is 100% pure beeswax.  

 

We make all of our creations here at our home in small batches, working with what is available seasonally from this land.  

 

And although we are not registered organic, we practice no-spray, no-till farming methods, feeding our furry and feathery friends certified organic grains.  

 

Tremendous care and love goes into everything we do here as we strive to live with this land in a healthy and reciprocal way, ensuring that future generations, both human and the more-than-human community, always have this special place to gather.
